“How did it go?”

Randy jumped, when he heard the voice behind him. “I should be used to you surprising me by now.”

Miles laughed.

Randy stared at him. “You didn’t see?”

“I want your assessment.”

“As far as my assignment, it went fairly well. They are going to the outing this weekend.”

“Then why the long face?”

“Because one of your friends doesn’t want them to be together. He tried to get me to sabotage the whole situation.”

“And you would rather take your chances with Marvin and Pauline to bring them together?”

Randy glared at Miles. “What’s wrong with you, suddenly? Why do you want me to scrap everything I’ve done so far?”

“I never said that.”

“But Tim told me I could have everything I want if I make them crash.”

“And you don’t want to take advantage of that?”

Randy frowned. “Excuse me if I can’t benefit from someone else’s misery. I wasn’t brought up that way. I don’t care if it means I don’t get everything I want.”

Miles smiled. “Tim said you would get everything you deserve.”

“So, you were watching.”

“Of course.”

“Well, I told him just what I told you. I wouldn’t take advantage of my assignments to get everything I wanted.”

“Again, he said everything you deserve.”

“Right. And I—”

“You’re not catching it. There is a huge difference between want and deserve.”

“I don’t follow.”

Miles sighed. “Okay. Look at it from this perspective. If you destroy their lives, what do you think you deserve?”

“Honestly, I would feel so guilty, I...” It hit him, and he grit his teeth. “He was the devil, wasn’t he?”

Miles grinned. “No, but Tim is one of the devil’s minions. Believe it or not, he was once in your shoes.”

“But he took advantage—”

“Advantage?”

Randy grinned. “He believed someone like him and tried to make me believe and break up my assignment.”

“Yes. He’s trying to gain some sort of standing by winning another soul... yours.”

“This is the other way I could fail, isn’t it?”

“That is correct. I knew you would be tempted, but had I told you, I would never be certain of your purity.”

Randy sighed with a smile. “Then I won.”

“Not yet. They have to become a couple. Trust me. Tim isn’t going to give up. He can still steal you from me, if he disrupts your assignment permanently. You won’t see him again, but he’ll be there.

Randy rolled his eyes. “Thanks for the warning.”

“You know you can do this. But if you don’t, I have enough faith in you for both of us.” Miles smiled and snapped his fingers.
